The 411 on 211, a New Local Service phone.jpg

The United Way of Linn County and the Linn County Commission on Children and Families would like to invite you to a 211 Information and Referral Line stakeholders meeting. The meeting will take place October 26th at 1 p.m. at the Central Willamette Community Credit Union Auditorium located in their administration building. As you may know, an information and referral service line has been both designated and established throughout Oregon. Many counties in Oregon including Lane, Multnomah, and Deschutes have established a 211 social service information and referral line for those in need.

Like 911, a person in need of help can simply call 211 to be connected to an information and referral specialist. Lincoln and Benton Counties are on the verge of going live with their 211 call line within the next year. The 211 line is not intended to replace existing crisis lines or specialty referral lines, but complement them.  Because of this exciting development, the United Way of Linn County and the Linn County Commission on Children and Families are looking to establish a line in Linn County.  Over 2600 residents of Linn County have already tried to use the line without success because of their contact with the service in other areas of Oregon. If you would like to join us for this short meeting, please follow the link below and register online.

Diapering Every Little Bottom

Huggies_ELB_Vert_4CP.jpgStudies show that 1 in 3 parents in the US are in Diaper Need and Linn County is no exceptions. This means that parents often forgo other expenses such food and utility bills to diaper their babies. Research shows that this need not only has a financial impact, but emotional impacts on parents who feel guilt, stress and embarrassment of not being able to change a dirty diaper.

In order to help parents and ensure that little bottoms are well taken care of, United Way has partnered with Huggies national Every Little Bottom Campaign, local Boys and Girls Clubs and Local agencies to raise diapers for Linn County parents.

Dates: The United Way Diaper Drive will be held November 7-13th
Where: Companies, organizations and the general public are encouraged to drop off diapers at Boys and Girls Club of Albany or  the Lebanon and Sweet Home sites of the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Santiam.
Goal: Our goal is to raise 50,000 diapers for little bottoms in Linn County

Other ways you can help:

Host a diaper drive at your place of work by having a drop box for donations

Put information about the diaper drive in your local company or organization newsletter

One step closer to better dental health in Linn County

The Boys and Girls Club of Albany is one step closer to implementing a permanent dental clinic for low-income children and adults. The Oregon Community Foundation recently granted the Boys and Girls Club of Albany $117,000 to assist with purchasing supplies and equipment for the clinic. Several community partners such as United Way, Albany General Hospital and Local dentists Dr. Goger and Dr. Hagerty have been instrumental in the organizing and planning of this future dental clinic. Boys and Girls Club hopes to open the clinic in January of 2011.

-- YMCA Mentoring, a program of the YMCA

If you have ever given any thought about becoming a mentor, now is the time.  The Y-Mentoring program of Linn County is seeking caring adults, aged 19 an over, to be a friend to a deserving youth. Volunteering just a few hours a week, can truly make a difference.  Just think about what you already do with your time and how you could involve a youth into those activities.  You’d be surprised at how easy it is to incorporate a youth into your life. Currently there are over 55 kids ages 8 through 17 referred to Y-Mentoring, who are waiting for an adult like you, to make a commitment and be an important part of their lives.  These kids aren’t looking for a hero or the perfect role model; sometimes all it takes is a good friend to make a difference.  Someone like you!

Don’t have a lot of extra time? Then consider becoming a Lunch Buddy! Forty minutes, once a week is all it takes to impact the life of a middle-school aged youth. It’s school-based, and you choose the day that works best for you. It’s a great way to experience the power of being a mentor that can easily fit into your schedule.  If you would like more information on how you could make a difference in the life of a youth, call Y-Mentoring at the Mid-Willamette Family YMCA at 926-4488, ext. 306. Build a friendship with a child and help build a better community!
