Business of the Year - Flakeboard
Flakeboard Manager Dave Leding made a pledge to employees that if they made a goal of $10,000 in donations to United Way, and increased participation to 100% during their pledge drive, he would shave his head.
This was a huge stretch goal from last year’s totals of $6,800 with 40% participation. It turns out that the Flakeboard employees really wanted to help out with the needs in our community this year and may have been inspired by Dave’s pledge.

Here are a few of Flakeboard’s 2010 giving statistics: -61% increase in participation of 117 employees -42% increase in employee giving to total $11,796 -Corporate Grant of $5,000

Celebrate Success!
This year has been a very hard year for our local community. We have lost a few businesses and have had several layoffs. This correlates with a high need for services in our local community.
The good news is that people are still giving to United Way. In fact, we are finding companies who have fewer employees are still reaching and exceeding previous year’s goals.
Here are a few statistics to prove what a caring community we have:
• 61 companies met or exceeded last year’s campaign results. • 33 companies increased their employee participation from last year • There are over 185 donors who give at a leadership level • We had a new company join the ranks this year, Triumph International. • Thanks to all of the support we have received, we are currently sitting at 89% of goal and still have results coming in!!
Please take time to view those companies who have gone above and beyond with community support during this year’s campaign. United Way Campaign Celebration Award Recipients.

Boys and Girls Club of Albany Plans Permanent Dental Clinic by: Amy Langdon, Boys and Girls Club of Albany
Last year the Boys & Girls Club of Albany completed a community needs assessment and discovered, as the United Way had two years prior, that dental is one of the top five needs in our community. In response, the Albany Boys & Girls Club partnered with the Tooth Taxi screening over 200 kids and treating an overwhelming 150.
If you are talking dental treatment of local uninsured kids, Dr. Mike Goger’s name will surely come up. He has been instrumental in bringing the Tooth Taxi to town, and has been an advocate for a permanent dental facility at the Club to serve the long-term dental needs of our kids.
With his help, the Albany Boys & Girls Club has partnered with over 15 local dentists, dental companies, the United Way, Albany In-Reach Clinic and the Samaritan Albany General Hospital Foundation to make this project a reality. So far the Boys & Girls Club has received the donation of two fully-equipped dental chairs and a free-standing x-ray machine. This month, the architectural and business plans for the facility will be finalized, with the goal to begin weekly dental screenings and treatment at the Albany Boys & Girls Club next winter.
The dental facility project is an exciting first step toward meeting the larger needs of our community. We foresee this program as extremely beneficial by not only alleviating children’s oral pain, but also lowering the emotional and financial strain on uninsured parents. The Club will consistently evaluate our facilities and programs so that we are always addressing the most pressing needs of our children.
A special thank you to United Way and the rest of our partners! We look forward to making many more kids smile! |
